Welcome Students and Parents of Division 7!

I hope that this will be a place where we can better open the lines of communication between myself, the students and the parents/guardians. I also hope to use this space as part of my general encouragement to use various forms of technology to help us learn in different and meaningful ways.

Homework

We are well into the first full week together as a class and I thought it best to write a little bit about homework and my expectations surrounding it.

First off, I am not a huge "homework" teacher, but by the looks of the growing list in the agendas, that might seem hard to believe. The list that appears in the agenda is more closely related to due dates than homework. I will usually do a lesson in class and give students time to work on the related assignments in class. Usually there is more than enough time given to complete the assignment in class, but should a student not finish, the "homework" is then to make sure it is done by the assigned due date. I won't just give an assignment that is expected to be completed at home where we would not have had a chance to work on it at school first. I will also use the homework section to give notice of upcoming tests or quizzes, which I usually post about a week in advance, to give students the chance to review at home before writing. We will also do review activities during that week before a test, but a little review at home helps to build those important study habits, which will really pay off as we continue along our school career.

Homework/Due Dates will always be written in our agendas daily and will also be posted to this website under the homework tab. Hope that helps! If you have questions, feel free to comment below, or come see me.

Cheers Division 11! Hope you have a great weekend!
Also, did any of you find your names in this Coke campaign? Let me know in the comments. I never found my first name in Coke (only in diet). Finding Martin was kind of funny ;)

For those of you that were interested, this is my son Jon (although we usually call him Jonny). He just turned two years old at the end of August and he is a lot of fun. He really enjoys running, playing with his toys and reading his many books. He says hello to all the students, and might try to make a small video saying so a little later, depending on how he is feeling. :)

Students made the switch to their classes for the 2014/2015 school year after recess today and I was very happy to welcome my new group of grade four students. We currently have 26 students in our class and will be getting started right away! Stay tuned for more!

The First Day

The first day of school doesn't feel like the first day. Not only is it an odd year with the actual start of school being 3 weeks later than normal, but starting the year with your class from the previous year just seems more like a reunion than a fresh start. I'm happy to see my students and spend time with them again, especially because we ended the year so abruptly, but I am also anxious and excited to bring on the challanges of a new class. I can't wait for the real first day.
