The past few weeks in the classroom have been a little different, but still remain fun and productive. As many read in the latest issue of the Mackenzie Buzz, our principal, Mr. Bodden, needed to take a brief medical leave. This meant Ms. Thompson needed to become the acting principal and I was asked to take on the job of acting vice principal. While I did remain in the classroom for about a third of the time, the majority of the classroom teaching was taken over by Ms. Shultz. We both worked together to make sure things stayed connected and that learning in the room would not be affected. Ms. Shultz has been great with the class and has really dove in with some excellent lessons and activities, particularly surrounding visual art and health and career education. It was definitely fun having her in the class! Mr. Bodden is scheduled to return to active duty after Spring Break, so things should be returning to normal, with my being back in the room full time after the break. Should this change, I will update everyone here.
On Friday, February 27th, the class was lucky enough to have Don Davies, the MP who represents a large area of our school's community, come to speak to the class about being a Member of Parliament, some of his personal experiences working in politics and his responsibilities both in Ottawa and at home. Both Mr. Davies and I were impressed by the amount of knowledge the students displayed and the thoughtful and relevant questions that they were able to ask. It was an amazing experience! Special thanks to Stewart's Mom, Jackie, and his grandmother for talking with Mr. Davies and booking him for the class.
On the sadder side of class news, our amazing field trip to go snow shoeing unfortunately had to be cancelled due to lack of snow. We held on to the bitter end in hopes that we might get lucky, but the snow just didn't happen for the local mountains this year. After Spring Break, the search will resume for another fun opportunity.
I hope everyone has a relaxing break and comes back ready to go with our third and final term! I am looking forward to a fun and productive finish to our year together!
